MY STORY

dawson metal design is an artistic metal welding studio, creating for clients all around Ontario. Artist and designer Dawson Calvert specializes in custom interior and exterior metal art and design. Her passion lies with sculpting metal into realistic or abstract functional and nonfunctional pieces. Metal can seem rigid at times; long cold rolled tubes, 4x8 hot rolled sheets, but when heated, bent, cut and formed they can create unique, warm, soft and even sensual pieces of art that anyone can enjoy. This studio creates in both steel and stainless steel. It offers MIG and TIG welding styles: as well as plasma and water jet cutting, bending, drilling and forging. Wood, glass and fabric can also be incorporated into most designs.

Dawson Calvert graduated school with a Fine Arts Degree from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. She majored in sculpting and printmaking but also have a love for painting and pencil drawing.

Dawson moved to Toronto, Ont to continue her education in the field of 3D Animation (Softimage) at Seneca College. She realized she has more of a passion for designing and hands on building which inspired her to follow her dream of becoming a metal sculptor.

In 2004, Dawson completed welding courses at ITT (Institute of Technical Trade) to learn the art of welding. Shortly after completing those courses she found a position working for an Artistic Welding Company in Toronto. There she learned how to create steel and stainless steel furniture, railings and a variety of other artistic metal projects.

There came a time to branch out on her own. She started her own company, dawson metal design in July of 2007. Since then, Dawson has been designing and working with hundreds of different home owners, design firms and construction companies. She has created everything from custom wall panels, dining and coffee tables, chairs and benches, kitchen islands and fireplace surrounds to garden planters, trellises and custom signs.

In 2019, Dawson migrated to the Trent Lakes area full time, working out of a new studio at her lakeside home. She has a desire to focus more on her art, but still continues to work with clients on commissioned projects. She is currently working to establish relationships with galleries, restaurants and retail locations in the region to showcase her latest work.

ARTIST COMMENT

My desire, my passion is creating art. Even as a young child I have always enjoyed sketching, sculpting with clay, painting even cartooning. Now as a growing artist, I draw inspiration from organic and inorganic forms. Nature, architecture and the feminine form are expressed in many ways through my sculptural metal and other multimedia pieces I have designed and built. The best part is if I can think of it, I can find a way to represent and build it and do it myself.

My Process

My process starts with understanding my clients' needs and vision. From there, I create a custom design and work closely with my clients to ensure their satisfaction every step of the way. I use both the latest technology and techniques or just old school hard work to bring your vision to life.
